Radar Methods and Equipment
Technology
- Scanning, Doppler Radar. Makes highly-resolved Doppler measurements of sea surface radial-velocity
- Vertically-polarized radar maximizes sea-surface return, allowing for lower-wind operability and longer range observations
- Phase-resolved wave measurement and prediction
Specifications
- Wind-speed: > 1 m/s (>2 m/s for T>18s)
- Hs: .2-7m with <10% accuracy, >7m if within linear behavior (H<.17λ)
- Tp mean error < 10%
- Max wave period greater than 22s with changes in component height of < 10cm (experimentally validated)
- Dp mean error < 10%
- Provides full directional spectrum with no restrictions/assumptions about bi/tri-modal seas
- Experimentally validated for vessel speeds in excess of 25 kts
- Doppler velocity scales as ω where as slope (used by WaMos/WaveX) scales as ω^2, allowing for Doppler to measure longer wave periods.
